Back in the day, the Sullivan County Catskills were a playground for the rich and famous seeking a weekend, summer getaway from the hustle and bustle of New York City. There was plenty of real estate to go around from large parcels of land to cloistered bungalow colonies. This brought a diverse population and a colorful blend of lifestyle to the Catskills. Unfortunately, with the crash of the market, came a drastic decline in getaway home sales. These homes were an accessory that many were suddenly unable to afford. Banks became strict in financing policies and the tax rate increased. Over the past few years however, a gradual change for the better has developed. In fact, there are some areas now that are completely sold out with no one looking to sell. In the past year, sales volume has increased drastically and many homes that have been on the market for years are now pending sale. In recent months as the weather has warmed up, several investors with a positive outlook have been buying up old, abandoned bungalow colonies with the hopes of reforming them to weekend rentals. The rental market has picked up immensely as many people can now afford a quick trip up from the city for a few days or a week. These bungalows had been completely neglected and were in serious need of repair. That said, because the rental market is so strong, this was a wise play on the investors part as the market has only continued to climb. Sullivan County has also been noted as the next up and coming summer destination. From a one billion dollar casino resort currently being built to a 90 million dollar wellness center, a high performance race track, and so much more, this Catskills playground is on the way to a new reformation.
